About the Book:
This book is a joyful celebration of Scottish dancing. Thus, it mirrors the delight of everyone going ‘heel for heel’ in the poem (and dance) called ‘Mairi’s Wedding’.
The story covers all the genres of Scottish dancing: from Highland Dancing which started in the Scottish Highlands centuries ago to the evolving reels, Scottish Country Dancing, ceilidhs and Step Dance which spread across the whole of Scotland and thence worldwide. Cindy Gray, a keen dancer herself, profiles fellow enthusiasts: Scots at ceilidhs, Canadian children immaculately turned out for ‘The Sword Dance’, barefoot Samburu tribesmen learning a giddy ‘Eightsome Reel’ as well as people in affiliated spheres such as bagpipers and kilt-makers. The amusing, touching and informative text is accompanied by colourful photographs of, for example, the manly beaux of the ball, their arms held
aloft like stags with antlers.
This book is a MUST for anyone who has ever danced ‘A Highland Fling’ - or who fancies they might - and for everyone drawn to stepping out gaily, ‘heel for heel and toe for toe’.
