Happy Mother’s Day!
To celebrate Mother’s Day we have invited Joanna Thomson, author of Live Well. Eat Well. Be Well., to take part in our quickfire Q&A.
What is a quick-fire Q&A?
We have our interviewee pick a number at random (between 1-42) and we ask them the general question listed next to it. Shortly after we switch to asking book-specific questions (1-22), to give you a brief insight into our wonderful writers and their books.
If you could summarize the book in five words, what would they be?
Educational, informative, helpful, enjoyable and timeless.
What advice would you give your younger self?
Not to be so timid and believe in myself.
If you could hypothetically be any character from any book, who would you be?
Jill from Jill Has Two Ponies.
What is your party trick?
Making people laugh. I always like to make people laugh. I used to get laughed at when I was a kid. As I got older, I thought it might be useful to be able to make people laugh with me not at me.
What's your biggest fear?
I think it's for the planet and the future of my grandchildren. Things are an awful mess.
What has been the best advice someone has ever given you?
Stick to your last, which is a shoemaking joke. But what it basically means is to stick to what you know best and do it well.
Where is your favourite place to write?
I tend to write in the workshop. I'm actually a jeweller as well. It's my creative space.
I also have ideas when I'm out walking. Things will occur to me when I'm walking the dog or riding the horse, but writing it down is in my studio.
If your book could have any other title, what would it be?
Nature Cure in a Nutshell was the title I really liked for it, but it was too niche.
How did you celebrate the publication of this book?
I had a book launch in Peebles, which is where I live, but we also had one in Edinburgh. It was lovely.
How do you relate to the content of your book, and how do you not?
It informs my way of life and there isn't much that I wouldn't agree with. I find it helpful. One of the reasons I wrote it was to have the information out there for my family as much as the rest of the world.
Why should people read this book?
It gives a different view on our approach to health. It's a very different way of looking at disease and illness. It looks at it in a much more positive way.
It's a useful book to let people see that there are other ways of doing things.
What is the main message you would like people to take from this book?
That they can take control of their own health.
They don't have to be passengers in their life. They have self-determination and the ability to be self-reliant. Also, they can take responsibility for themselves.
