In this 12 part, quick-fire Mythbusters series, Revolution author Todd Westbrook dispels the myths and misconceptions that surround the wind power movement. This time, Todd tackles the idea that wind power is noisy…

MYTH: WIND POWER IS NOISY

Todd says:
There were certainly some noisy machines in the early years of the wind industry, and faulty hardware can still cause a problem, but huge progress has been made in this area. Generally speaking, modern wind farms produce less than 40 decibels at distances of 400 metres, well below the level of background noise in most communities. Low frequency sounds known as amplitude modulation are also produced by some but not all wind farms, and international standards are currently being developed to better understand and address this issue.
