David Amess

SIR DAVID AMESS was a dedicated Conservative Member of Parliament from 1983 until his death in 2021. His parliamentary career began as the MP for Basildon, a constituency he held from 1983 until 1997. During his time in Basildon, he played a key role in securing the Conservative victory in the 1992 general election, as his constituency was seen as a bellwether seat.
Amess was elected to represent Southend West, a seat he held from 1997 onwards. Over his long career, he became a well-respected figure in the Commons, known for his strong advocacy on a range of issues, most notably his passion for animal welfare. Amess actively championed numerous causes in this area, supporting legislation that aimed to protect animals and improve their welfare. His involvement with organizations such as the Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation reflected his deep commitment to this cause, and he was instrumental in advancing laws related to animal cruelty prevention.
Throughout his time in Parliament, Amess was widely regarded as a personable, diligent representative who cared deeply about his constituency and the issues he championed.
