About Home Game:

It’s time to say it loud and clear – it’s not a luxury to have a home, it’s a human right. It’s time we all found room in our hearts to help end homelessness. Joining the Homeless World Cup family is the first step in realising that goal. From the foreword by VAL McDERMID

An estimated 100 million people worldwide are homeless and 1.6 billion live in sub-standard housing. But how can such a simple game like football tackle such a complex problem?

Mel Young and Peter Barr tell the story of the 1.2 million homeless people from 70 countries who have taken part in the Homeless World Cup since it started in 2003.

Home Game describes its profound impact on players, spectators and society at large – and how ‘a ball can change the world’

Praise for The Homeless World Cup:

When people have a bad deal in life and things haven't been going their way, one of the ways they can get self-esteem back is through sports. The Homeless World Cup does that, and it also puts on the agenda that homelessness is a global issue. We all love football and we all hate homelessness – it's a no-brainer.  IRVINE WELSH, Novelist

All over the world, we've got to end homelessness. Everyone should have a home. It's a right and not a privilege. People treat the homeless as if they're sub-human. In order to overcome this discrimination, we have to unite against homelessness as we did when we fought apartheid.  ARCHBISHOP DESMOND TUTU, speaking at the Homeless World Cup in Cape Town (2006)

I have seen how the Homeless World Cup really does inspire homeless people to change the direction of their lives. COLIN FARRELL, Actor and Ambassador for the Homeless World Cup

Football and the Homeless World Cup have the power to fire up a person to excel as a human being, to change their lives for the better. ERIC CANTONA, Footballer and Actor

The week-long tournament in Cardiff provided an incredible platform: for the players to demonstrate their skill and passion; for the public to engage with the tournament and with the varied debate and discussion that sat alongside football. The tournament generated a huge amount of positive goodwill in Cardiff and beyond, and the work to harness this and take it forward into a positive, lasting legacy, has already begun. MICHAEL SHEEN, Actor and Homeless World Cup Champion

I’m extremely proud to be joining the Homeless World Cup as a Champion. I’m excited to combine my passion for the game alongside the powerful work the Homeless World Cup does. Not only are they raising the issue of homelessness but actively doing something about it. CRISTINA RODLO, Actress and Homeless World Cup Champion

I didn’t think there could be anything better than the World Cup, but here it is: The Homeless World Cup! The only thing better than football in my eyes, is football that helps people. HERO FIENNES TIFFIN, Actor and Homeless World Cup Champion

The Homeless World Cup demonstrates the power of sport to bring people together and change lives for the better, something which I saw for myself first-hand when the tournament was held in Glasgow in 2016. The positive effect it had on the players lives and the inspiration they took from it was hard to miss. NICOLA STURGEON, Former First Minister of Scotland

About Back o the Net!:

This book is a reminder for those who have stood and suffered, sat, and celebrated, argued, fought and struggled as well as kept coming back, that supporting is more than just a game. I can assure you – it is much more important than that! DONALD C STEWART, Ayr United

It doesn’t matter where you are in the world or what stage you’re at in life – you never forget when you first set eyes on your football club.

Back o the Net! is an ode to the unwavering love that every football fan has for their club, comprising voices from many different walks of life. The devoted, the long suffering, the hometown fans, the ones who didn’t grow up living in the same town as their team, the winners and the losers. All with the same underlying tie – they are dedicated and devoted to the very end.

Whether it’s in the back o our net or theirs, we’ll always love our team.

I’m a firm believer that supporting your local team, the team you’ve been brought up with, is very important, and I always will. I’m a season ticket holder, have been a shareholder and, like thousands of Fifers, the Raith Rovers result is the first one I look for every week. GORDON BROWN, FORMER P.M. (2007-2010), Raith Rovers

We support our team, but we always remember the first time, the first place, the palace of the arts where we first watched them perform. DAVID McVEY, Kirkintilloch Rob Roy

You may change friends, you may change wife, but you never change football team. Always a Warrior. GEORG MATHISEN, Stenhousemuir

Reviews:

It helps if you’ve got an excellent band of contributors for a book like this and that’s certainly the case with this Scottish treasure. There are heart-warming tales and brilliant anecdotes by the bucketload. LATE TACKLE

About the Editors:

PAUL GOODWIN is the co-founder of the SFSA, an organisation which aims to provide fan representation, support community ownership and lead campaigns and research to improve the state of Scottish football. Since 2016, the organisation has run the SFSA Fans Awards. He is the Manager of Kippen FC, a team that he resurrected after it ceased playing in 2018; he also coaches Balfron High School’s senior football team.

DONALD C. STEWART is a battle-scarred veteran of Somerset Park where, at the age of 8 in 1973, he watched his hometown team draw with Peter Shilton’s Leicester City in the Texaco Cup (some fella called Alex Ferguson, playing for Ayr United at number 8, seeing out the twilight of his playing career). Since then, Donald C Stewart has enjoyed an eclectic career. Author, broadcaster, writer of note and reviewer, he is also a fully qualified nursery school teacher. A theatrical background has seen him review shows for over ten years – some of which were even worth going to. He writes two weekly boxing columns for RingSide Report. In his two weekly columns for the Scottish Football Supporters’ Association, he covers hot topics of the day and reimagines fitba fowk who have something to say, saying it in a different context – from drag competitions in Millport to dodgy pubs in Stirling.

About It's A Goal!:

The scoring of a goal in football unleashes emotions for the scorer, teammates, opponents and onlookers on terracing and living-room couches, that can play havoc with our anticipation of what constitutes an ordinary day.

Legendary commentator Archie Macpherson delves into the heart of the beautiful game, where the simple act of scoring a goal becomes a profound moment of human connection. From the roar of victory to the sting of defeat, Macpherson captures the essence of football’s emotional rollercoaster through a curated personal selection of significant goals – some spectacular, some less-so, some not-at-all, but all significant – together with the fascinating backstory to each goal and the match in which it was scored.

With unparalleled insight and passion, Macpherson invites readers to experience the highs and lows of football, a game where so often a goal transcends the boundaries of the pitch to touch the hearts of fans worldwide.

It’s a Goal! is a testament to the enduring power of football to unite, inspire and move us all – whoever our team, wherever we are.
