About the Book:

In this fascinating third instalment in his Glasgow series, Ian R Mitchell reveals the neglected history of many of the metropolis’ cultural and social icons. As his engaging descriptions take us off the beaten track and through often forgotten city streets, Mitchell explores the neglected heritage and beauty of the post-industrial city, and the scientists, artists, architects and working people who have made Glasgow what it is today. With chapters ranging from cinema to factories and Govan to Maryhill, this book uncovers a different side of Scotland’s largest city.

Reviews:

In the course of his journey round the more abrasive areas of the city… (Mitchell) always manages to come up with a plethora of fascinating facts ... (He) takes us behind (the) facade to unveil some real treasures. The warmth and wit of working-class Glasgow provides the book’s heart and soul. TOM KYLE, The Daily Mail on This City Now

Mitchell’s infectious enthusiasm for the places visited in this book leaves the reader with a compelling urge to don walking shoes and retrace his steps. JIM WHYTE, Morning Star on Clydeside: Red Orange and Green

Mitchell pulls back the curtain on these Clydeside communities, looking beyond the quieted mills and coal mines to provide a rich working class history, too often overlooked and underappreciated. SCOTTISH LIFE on Clydeside: Red, Orange and Green

About the Author:

IAN R MITCHELL is a historian, who gave up teaching to devote himself to writing full time. After graduating from university in his native Aberdeen in 1973, Ian did postgraduate research at Leeds, followed by a British Council scholarship to study in Berlin. The author of articles in learned journals, and of a standard textbook on Bismarck, Ian taught for over 20 years at Clydebank College, mainly on German history. Increasingly interested in Scottish history and heritage, and a lifelong hillwalker, Ian has produced several other books, including Scotland’s Mountains before the Mountaineers, a pre-history of explorations and ascents in the Scottish mountains. Ian also writes frequently on outdoor matters for climbing journals and the general media. In addition, he gives talks and slide shows on his books.
