The rise of remote work has transformed the way we work, allowing many to enjoy the flexibility and comfort of their home office. As such, at Luath we too still work remotely (from Edinburgh to Aberdeen).
However, working from home comes with its own set of challenges, such as distractions, isolation and maintaining productivity. To help you thrive in this work arrangement, we've compiled a list of key tips for working from home effectively.
Create a Dedicated Workspace
One of the most important aspects of working from home is establishing a dedicated workspace. Choose a quiet, well-lit area where you can focus without interruptions. Make sure your space is kept organised and clean, and stay on top of clutter. This not only helps you concentrate but also signals to your brain that it's time to work.
Stick to a Routine
Maintaining a daily routine can provide structure and help you stay on track. Set specific work hours, just as you would in a traditional office and stick to them. Set what times you go for your lunch (and when you do, don’t eat lunch at your desk - allow yourself the space to separate work from your breaks). Don’t roll out of bed to jump straight on, allow yourself the morning to wake up and eat breakfast properly. This consistency will improve your work-life balance and prevent overworking.
Dress for Success
While it's tempting to stay in your pajamas all day, getting dressed as if you were going to the office can have a positive impact on your mindset and productivity. It signals a transition from relaxation mode to work mode. Even if it is business on top and relaxation on the bottom, as long as you change out of your pajamas this change will still create a positive impact.
Set Clear Boundaries
Inform your family or housemates about your work hours and boundaries. Shut your door during work hours, and pop a note on the calendar of your work hours. Just because you're at home doesn't mean you're available for personal activities during your designated work time. Clear communication is key to avoiding distractions.
Eliminate Distractions
Identify common distractions in your home and take steps to minimize them. This may involve silencing your phone, turning off social media notifications or setting specific break times for chores and personal tasks.
Use Technology Wisely
Leverage technology to enhance your remote work experience. Tools like Zoom and communication apps can help you stay connected with your team and manage tasks efficiently. Our team loves to use Slack as our main form of communication - outside of emails. It allows us to grab each other for quick queries or notes on tasks we are working on. We also ensure that we have separate channels to casually talk in - share a funny joke we saw online or something cool we are working on. This allows us to keep the work environment cheerful, despite being far apart.
Take Regular Breaks
It's important to take short breaks throughout the day to stretch, walk around and clear your mind. These moments of respite can actually boost productivity and creativity. If you find yourself stuck in a corner with no way out, step away from your computer. Grab a glass of water or a hot drink and take a moment. We can tend to block ourselves out when locked in on one screen.
Set Goals and Prioritize Tasks
Create a to-do list or set daily goals to stay organized and focused. Prioritize tasks based on importance and deadlines, and break them into manageable chunks to avoid feeling overwhelmed. The best way I do this is by creating weekly plans - whether it be for our socials or for my own workload - this allows me to judge what needs my attention and where a lot easier.
Practice Self-Care
Remember to take care of yourself both physically and mentally. Maintain a healthy lifestyle by eating well, exercising regularly and getting enough sleep. Consider practicing relaxation techniques like meditation to reduce stress, you can learn more about this in our previous blog here.
Learn to Say No
Don't overcommit to projects or tasks that you can't realistically complete. Learn to say no when necessary to avoid burnout and maintain your work-life balance.
Working from home can be a rewarding experience if you establish a productive and balanced routine. By following these key tips, you can maximize your efficiency, maintain your well-being and make the most of your remote work arrangement.
Embrace the flexibility and freedom that working from home offers and, with practice, you'll become a master of this modern way of working.
